Slow Flow Yoga: Honor Your Truth

Hey yoga fam,

I want to share a yoga teaching that’s really been speaking to me in this current life season… satya. Satya is one of the yamas from the eightfold path that’s found within Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. There are five yamas in total, and the word yama translates to character-building/ethical observances, restraints, attitudes or behaviors that we want to cultivate within us, so we can apply & practice them out in the world.

Satya translates to truthfulness and is defined as standing in your truth or speaking your truth. With satya, the absolute truth is that we are a manifestation of the divine; that our soul which resides within our physical body is timeless, serene, peaceful, ever present, unchanging and constant. The relative or subjective truth is that “our truth” is ever-evolving based on our season of living and what we’re navigating.

Now how does satya specifically relate to you?

Here are a few ideas:

  • Be truthful around your availability and capacity.
  • Be truthful about your sadhana & studies.
  • Be truthful with your employer if there’s a break in integrity or if your values are no longer in
alignment with how the company is operating.
  • Be truthful with your family and friends if they’re taking advantage of your time.
  • Be truthful with yourself about what inspires you within the yoga tradition, instead of succumbing to the popular narrative that yoga equates with fitness.
  • Be truthful about your value, charge what your time and energy is worth.

As you can see, there’s so many ways that our truth can be stretched, ignored, not believed in or taken for granted. Our truth is both universal and personal, and it wants to be seen and heard. It wants to be watered, it wants to grow, it wants to be cared for.

Speaking and standing in your truth will be difficult,

but ignoring what’s true for you will be just as painful. When you feel as though you’re at a crossroads, come back to the practices that nurture your spirit, then reorient towards satya and living it.

If you’re wanting to explore this yoga teaching, contemplate what feels true for you with a new grounding slow flow.

Allie, xx
