If you’re new to chanting, this is a great place to begin as the bija mantras are simple (but very powerful!) sounds that can easily be remembered & repeated.
But also if you’re new to chanting, you’re probably wondering what the word “bija” means…
Bija is a Sanskrit word that translates to mean “seed”, and it’s used in several ways. For the purpose of this conversation, we’re referring to bija mantras which are one syllable sounds that carry great meaning.
Just like how an acorn 🌰 holds all of the ingredients needed for it to grow into a stunning & strong 🌳 oak tree, seeds sounds also hold all of the ingredients needed for healing.

For the charka system specifically, there’s a bija mantra dedicated to each one that helps with activation, purification and optimization.
Each seed sound is below, in order from root to crown ➡️
- LAM
- VAM
- RAM
- YAM
- HAM
- AUM
- AUM or Silence
During our practice today, we’ll begin with pranayama to create a subtle body connection, then chant each chakra bija mantra for 3 minutes.

My hope is that at the end of this practice, you’ll not only be 🐝 buzzing with coherent energy, but that you’ll also have added new tools ⚒️ to your toolkit.
You can repeat these mantras altogether or separately, you can chant them aloud or internally, you can pair them with a mala for Japa meditation, you can use them formally on the mat, or off the mat when extra support is needed.
Finally, a bit more on why sound is so transformative for us yoga students!
Sound is the element associated with the vishuddha chakra, the word “vishuddha” translates to purification, and the purpose of this chakra is resonance.
When we leverage sound, and specifically the sacred sound of mantra, we’re purifying ourselves of toxicity, dissonant vibrations, and inauthentic ways of thinking, feeling and being.
Sounding or chanting allow us to create a deeper resonance within ourselves, which in turn creates a richer resonance within our worlds.
For me, the richer resonance translates to expressing myself freely & living authentically…two things that don’t come naturally to me!
