Welcome to your Chakra Yoga Flow to Cleanse your Heart Chakra.

The heart chakra, anahata, is the fourth chakra and the center of your entire energy system. It can be likened to a bridge that connects the three lower, physical chakras with the three upper, spiritual chakras. It’s the midway point between heaven and earth, mind and body, spirit and matter, and universality and individualism.

Because of the heart chakra’s location, you bet ya it’s pretty damn important! Let’s look at some heart chakra basics. 

Heart Chakra Basics

  • Sanskrit – anahata
  • Location – entire chest region, upper extremities, between sternum & collarbone 
  • Element is air 
  • Color is green
  • Bija mantra – YAM 
  • Activity connecting
  • Self-acceptance 
  • Social identity 
  • Demon is grief
  • Right to love & be loved
  • Purpose – love, connection, relationships 
  • Goals – self-love, self-acceptance, compassion, healthy relationships, able to co-create, quality of breath, being of service

Your heart chakra is your relationship headquarters, it includes your relationship to others, all living beings, the planet, and yourself. It’s concerned with love, forgiveness, acceptance, expansion, connection, balance, and following one’s heart’s desires.

The heart chakra element is air, and in the yoga practice, this element can be linked to pranayama exercises (using your breath to extend and expand your vitality or life-force energy). The yogis realized this connection thousands of years ago which led to the creation of pranayama, and it being included in their path to enlightenment (also known as the eight limbs of yoga system). 

Your breath has the ability to influence the state of your mind because your mind depends on the quality of your energy, energy that can be influenced through yogic breathing exercises. For this reason, I always preach that your breath is a powerful tool to keep your heart strong, soft, and open. Your breath can energize and uplift you, and it can calm, relax, and balance you. The lesson here: when life becomes too difficult, return to your breath and let it support you.

The entire class has been designed to inhale strength, extension, and forgiveness, and to exhale space, expansion, and acceptance. The sequence includes several heart opening postures like puppy pose, cat + cow, bound standing forward folds, and dynamic cobra pose. It also utilizes breath of joy to energize and uplift you, then settles you into savasana. 

It’s my intention that at the very end, you feel strong yet strong, able to forgive and accept, and able to love others and be loved right back.
