Welcome to the chakra series – if you want to know more about your inner workings, how Eastern and Western philosophies unite, and how your physical self relates to your emotional, mental, and spiritual self….
Then you’re 100% in the right place!
Today, we’re exploring the third chakra – Manipura. The third chakra is my jam, like I think it could be my favorite….
I find myself resonating with EVERY single detail that it involves. It’s almost as if the text was speaking to me as I read it. Let me just get weird with it for a moment, a brief moment…. here’s what was running through my mind as the words were flowing through my eyes.
Allie – you are destined to be a badass, you can and will lead yourself into independence and financial freedom, you will then lead other people into their independence, and your life will be filled with positive power, authentic work, and a deep sensation for life.
I swear, pinky promise, my third chakra spoke that to me. And I’ll take it, because that statement is exactly what I want to pursue in life, to the tee.
But enough about me, let’s focus on our chakra system and why we’re here.
At this point in our journey, we’ve traveled from base of the spine – our grounded center, up into the abodminal area – our sexual/creative center, and now we’ve landed in navel center – our power center. By learning, exploring, and understanding the first two chakras, we’re able to now dive into the third chakra – Manipura.
This chakra focuses on the power of transformation, our ability to overcome inertia, to take the first step, to continue to put one foot in front of the other, and to recognize we are the beholders of our true willpower.
So with that said, let’s get into friends – below is a DEEP breakdown of your naval chakra/the third chakra/the Manipura chakra.
Third Chakra Basics:
The third chakra governs our self-esteem, personal power, power of transformation, and warrior like energy.
- English term – the navel chakra
- Location – the navel area up to the breastbone or sternum
- Element – Fire
- Color – Yellow
- Mantra – RAM
- Descriptive words – fire, power, will, energy, metabolism, transformation, self-esteem
- Function – will, power, assertiveness
- Malfunction – ulcers, diabetes, digestive disorders
- Inner state – laughter, joy, anger
- Food – starches
The third chakra, Manipura, is located in our navel center, it starts at the bellybutton and travels up to the sternum.
It’s that place where we get the butterfly feelings…
This location, our solar plexus, translates to a fiery, energetic, warm, light, and powerful center. It’s responsible for our “let’s get shit done” attitude, our willpower, our stamina, and so on. Because of it’s location, the third chakra is associated with our metabolism and is responsible for the regulation and distribution of our energy. Let’s examine this concept a bit further…..
We wake up every day and have the opportunity to nourish ourselves through food, this food is then metabolized and distributed throughout the body with an energetic quality, this energy then takes two routes….
- It either fuels and motivates us to be actively focused and determined OR
- It breaks down our energetic level, causes lethargy, lack of motivation, and lack of self-confidence
So what can we infer from this?
We are what we eat.
The more positive energy we consume, the more energetically focused and awesome we can be.
So if you’re reading this and feeling a tad sluggish, evaluate what you’re consuming on a daily basis, be honest with yourself, don’t beat yourself up about it, and then make a change. Start small, record your gains and setbacks, and then keep striving to nourish yourself – body, mind, and soul.
The third chakra takes serious balls to face, it involves evaluating the relationship you have with yourself, being brutally honest about what’s lacking, and then mustering up the courage to ignite your inner power. Let’s examine how we can tap into this chakra and do all of the above.
Our work here lies in recognizing that “power” is within all of us, it’s an integrative force, it’s a union of movement and matter, and it requires integrity.
We’re raised from a young age to respect power, to acknowledge those in a more powerful role, to focus our efforts on our strengths…. and while this lesson is impactful in some instances, it’s also detrimental to our personal self-power, self-worth, and self-esteem.
It’s time to take back your power.
Start to recognize that everything within your body, mind, and soul is an intelligent, integrated network of power. You have the ability to control this network, to feed it nourishing energy, to reinforce it’s abilities through trial and error, and as a result – build your self-confidence, self-worth, and self-esteem.
I challenge you to wake up every morning, say a prayer of gratitude for your badass self, write down what you love about you, and then get to it – you only have one opportunity here, so take responsibility for it!
Our will is consciously controlled change.
It’s the combination of mind and action that creates the will to overcome negative self-talk, ignite our fiery solar plexus, and further us along our journey to enlightenment.
Following the path of will isn’t easy.
It will lead us into scary situations – ridicule, risks, criticism, failure, and possibly abandonment. And while all of that isn’t ideal, it’s a necessary side effect to following our intended path.
No one promised us this life thing would be easy, but it is promised that we can experience a fulfilling, rewarding, exceptional life – so long as we do the work!
“Though many paths are difficult, the ones that are right for us have a coherency of flow that makes the difficult easier to bear. It is the task of our intelligence to perceive the correct path. The task of the will is to follow that path.” – Anodea Judith
And lastly, self-esteem.
This aspect of our third chakra is what catapults us into the next realm of higher conscious living.
We must be willing to fail, take risks, fall, be ridiculed, and be doubted…. because what comes from this is an exceptional human experience. You learn to shift and shape through situations, to navigate the world of independence and experimentation, which will result in exactly what I said above…
I know that word seems incredibly woo-woo and way out of sight, but in this modern age, enlightenment to me represents individuality, independence, self-fulfillment, and a greater sense of purpose.
And who doesn’t want that?
Tips to Stay Balanced:
- Do something different, break the mold, be spontaneous, live a lot!
- Avoid people who fear your ideas…. they don’t get it, don’t waste your energy here, simply smile and move on
- Move with a sense of ease, enjoy the journey, don’t force it to unfold – patience grasshopper
- Break free from attachments and release what’s not serving your ultimate purpose
- Focus your attention and direct your energy towards the path…. be incredibly aware of where you allow your energy to flow to
- Stay present – always
As you’d imagine from all of the above talk, the correlating yoga postures focus on strength, warrior like power, confidence, and personal power!
- Reverse Plank
- Bow Pose
- Crescent Pose
- Forearm Balance
For each chakra, there’s a corresponding seed sound or what can be thought of as a mantra meditation tool.
- Manipura Mantra – RAM.
If your work lies here – willpower, transformation, self-esteem – then use this mantra to help inspire and support your work. I’ve included a link above about mantra meditation and all that it encompasses to help start the meditation process.
Also, in the book Wheels of Life by Anodea Judith, she provides an empowerment meditation section + a beautiful opening meditation. I highly recommend reading/doing both of these!
