What’s up yoga babes?
This month’s yoga tutorial is brought to you by Kurma Yoga. I discovered this brand over at Yogi Approved (where you can also find more of me) and instantly knew I had to reach out. And not just because of the opportunity, but because the creator is a direct disciple of BKS Iyengar.
Now, if you’re new to the yoga journey, you’re thinking… who the hell is that weird name?
And trust me, I too had this moment of who, what, and why do I care?
Well, let me tell ya.
BKS Iyengar is credited with bringing yoga to the west, he’s basically the reason we’re all here (me writing a blog & you reading the blog). We owe him a huge THANK YOU for mustering up the courage to bring the unknown practice of yoga to us. In his time, yoga wasn’t trendy, cool, or a respected career path.
It was considered circus nonsense.
But with his persistence and dedication, along with a handful of other devoted yogis, they changed the face of yoga – FOREVER. It’s mind boggling to me that in such a short period of 40 years (give or take), our entire culture has embraced the practice of yoga. We love it, can’t get enough of it, and are truly benefiting from it.
So thank you Mr. Iyengar – a thousand times over.
And now that I’ve ran through a short history lecture, let’s get into this wheel tutorial from Kurma Yoga….
First off – what is a yoga wheel? And why should you invest in this yoga prop?
The answer is simple – it’s a tool to help open your body, shed layers, break through barriers, uncover false or limiting beliefs, and in a realer sense – advance your yoga practice. The reason I mention all of the woo-woo stuff is because that’s what props do for me, truthfully. When the shoulders, chest, and back are able to open in a supportive, relaxed environment – magic happens.
Real life, incredible magic.
But if you’re looking for a more serious reason, below are the added benefits to rolling around on a wheel:
- Offers a deep front stretch.
- Opens the entire back and shoulders.
- Improves spine flexibility.
- Releases muscle tension.
- Stretches hip flexers and quadriceps.
- Assists with backbends of all kinds.
- Can be used in hundreds of different ways, the options are endless!
And now, I promise, the tutorial begins.
